For most of my life candy was without doubt my favorite part of Halloween... and Easter (let's hope I don't get hit by a bolt of lightning for saying that). It still pretty much is, but since I don't trick or treat any more I've expanded my Halloween so that I can celebrate in other ways, namely music and movies! After all, does anyone love anything more than Hocus Pocus? Here I have rounded up some of my favorite spooky movies and tunes for you. Enjoy the movie portion today and then stay tuned for some tunes hopefully tomorrow (even though it'll be November)!
1998
Directed by: Duwayne Dunham
Starring: Debbie Reynolds, Judith Hoag, Kimberly J. Brown, Joey Zimmerman, Phillip Van Dyke, Emily Roeske, Robin Thomas
Everybody's favorite Disney channel movie is a glorious combination of cheese and bad acting. If you're looking at it in technical terms, it's not high on the list, but all of those technical faults work together to make it just plain brilliant.
1993
Directed by: Kenny Ortega
Starring: Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker, Kathy Najimy, Omri Katz, Thora Birch, Vinessa Shaw, Jodie-Amy Rivera, Larry Bagby, Tobias Jelinek, Stephanie Faracy, Charles Rocket, Doug Jones
It's the Halloween movie to end all Halloween movies. Three cackling witches, kids saving the day, and plenty of tricks and spells in between are all you need! Oh, plus a talking cat. Those magical ingredients serve up the most perfectly ridiculous concoction of sweets.
Directed by: Pete Doctor, David Silverman, Lee Unkrich
Starring: Billy Crystal, John Goodman, Mary Gibbs, Steve Buscemi, James Coburn, Jennifer Tilly, Bob Peterson, John Ratzenberger, Frank Oz, Daniel Gerson, Steve Susskind, Bonnie Hunt
Not technically a Halloween movie, but who cares? It is all about monsters and that's close enough for me. Welcome to the world of monsters full of odd numbers of eyes and limbs as well as questionable colors of skin and/or fur where two friends get stuck chasing after a human kid. One of my favorites from Pixar that never fails to make me laugh and cry, and cry and laugh.
Directed by: Edgar Wright
Starring: Simon Pegg, Nick Frost, Kate Ashfield, Lucy Davis, Dylan Moran, Nicola Cunningham, Peter Serafinowicz, Rafe Spall, Bill Nighy, Jessica Hynes, Penelope Wilton
A romantic comedy with zombies. What could be more perfect for Halloween? Clearly I'm not a horror film lover as you can tell by this list. This is one of my all time favorites so I whip it out whenever I have a chance. Snarkasm, alcohol, and gut-busting laughs are all at the center of this crazy, crazy movie.
1974
Directed by: Mel Brooks
Starring: Gene Wilder, Madeline Kahn, Peter Boyle, Marty Feldman, Cloris Leachman, Teri Garr, Kenneth Mars, Richard Haydn
This movie is so wrong that it's right. It's raunchy and rude but it will make you laugh until you cry especially when they put on the ritz.
That's all for today folks! Happy Halloween! What are your favorite traditions and movies?
I miss trick-or-treating as a kid! My favorite part about Halloween is the excuse to create and wear a fun costume. In terms of movies, I'm not a big fan of too many that fit the theme. However Monsters Inc is one of my all-time favorites, since you included that! I also enjoyed being scared to death by the Scream movie series.
