Slow Dancing in a Spinning Room

The thing that I love about Dancing with the Stars, aside from the fact that it's one of the funniest shows on television, is that after some of the not so stellar dancing on the first show of the week, they pull out some amazing stuff on the results show. Derek Hough can do some pretty awesome things and when accompanied by Jaimie Goodwin, results in this.

Dress like a 90s kid who loves punk

I love how music influences fashion and here are two of my favorite decades combined! I started out with a Ramones tee - one of my favorite bands - and started layering. To give the look some '90s grunge love, I added my floral skirt from Nordstrom and my flannel from Old Navy. Converse were the perfect throwback shoe so I put those on over some slouchy socks. My accessories include a hot pink spiked Urban Outfitters headband and a really cool necklace from American Eagle that's a big bulky chain wrapped in fabric, and those helped maintain a tough-but-still-a-girl vibe.

2013 Met Gala: Bringing Punk Uptown

Believe it or not, punk is one of my favorite aesthetics, moments in music, and eras. Besides loving a good tartan and the classic punk aesthetic of destruction and subversiveness, I love that it isn't just about safety pins. Just look at the music. Some make the accusation that the Ramones' songs all sound the same, and that might have some truth but they always played hard and fast and they never incessantly jammed. Being your own person is at the heart of the punk movement, anarchy aside, and that's always been my goal. Last night's Met Gala provided, as always, some of the most amazing and daring looks of the season. This year took it to new heights, bringing downtown uptown, with the help of a very special urinal.

Summer Movie Monday: Time to party with Jay!

Get out your pearls, throw on your beaded dress, cut your hair short: it's time for the classic that you read in English class junior year! With the cast alone, this was sure to make a splash. Add in Baz Luhrmann at the head and you've got an interesting adaptation waiting for you at the theaters. Hopefully this version's livelier than its famous predecessor, but it could potentially go off the rails if too much artistic liberty is taken. Don't forget about Australia. The amazing costumes and soundtrack might not be worth it.

Throwback Thursday: Mini Movie Marathon

Set yourself up for the perfect summer throwback movie marathon! These movies are all placed in the summer of a not too distant decade that stirs up all kinds of nostalgia and warm fuzzies.

Dirty Dancing

Released in 1987, but taking place in 1963, it's the summer every girl wants: dancing with Patrick Swayze and coming into your own.

The Sandlot

Released in 1993, but taking place in 1962, this is the perfect summer of baseball and shenanigans with your best friends. This is without doubt one of my all-time favorite movies because it feels like home no matter where I watch it. It makes me want to take my Chucks out of the closet and go get some grass stains.

Super 8

J.J. Abrams did a few things brilliantly with this movie - he kind of recreated the cast of The Sandlot (I swear it's not THAT much of a stretch) and he created the perfect throwback to his childhood of alien movies and everyone else's summer of getting into trouble in the neighborhood.

Boho Preppy

So I'm not all about a super classically preppy look, but I do really love the kind of original, Annie Hall-tomboy-prep. Mix it with some '60s elements and here are the results! The slightly preppy elements of the cardigan and shirt contrast the more bohemian elements of the skirt and the hat to keep it fresh, wearable, and a little cozy, as do the different textures and weights.

Iron Man 3

Robert Downey jr. never disappoints me with his sarcasm, wit, and honesty. I'm just hoping that this stays true to the first Iron Man and doesn't lose the humor, despite whatever dire circumstances occur. I'm looking forward to seeing Tony and Pepper's relationship progress further, which I think was one of the high points of Iron Man 2. Iron Man 2 was by no means a bad movie, but it just wasn't as stellar as its predecessor. Here's hoping Iron Man 3 tops both of them!

Update:
I loved this movie. With Shane Black at the helm it felt a little bit like Kiss Kiss Bang Bang 2, in an awesome way. I could never have predicted Ben Kingsley's hilarity. This movie just worked in so many ways. The thing that's great about this character is his innovation. There wasn't too much in the second movie for him to truly innovate and think out of the box with. This put him in some truly hairy situations which lent themselves to originality and humor and kept the entire story feeling fresh and spontaneous.
