Tuesday Tunes: Otis Redding covered by St. Paul and The Broken Bones

Happy Tuesday! I haven't written much in a while but sometimes inspiration just starts to strike all at once. I was surfing the interwebs as I often do and found some pretty stellar Otis Redding covers. St. Paul and The Broken Bones are a soul group based out of Alabama and boy do they bring the soul. Rarely do I find Otis covers that I want to listen to as much as the originals, and these guys are at the top of the pile for me. They do enough to make the songs sound new, but truly retain the integrity of what the original songs are. Cheesy though it may be, they don't shy away from the passion that is so engrained in Redding's work, and that element is so vital to the success of these songs, and is a huge part of the reason I've had them on repeat for the past two days.

And ending with an equal bang, here's their utterly passionate version of I've Been Loving You Too Long that brought me to tears and Paul to his knees:

Dressometry

Between intern/student life, dancing up a storm, and trying to be as fabulous as Cher Horowitz (a full time job ladies and gents), I also work with a company Dressometry and now I'm shouting from the rooftops about how great it is. Modcloth Uniquely You: Sweetly Literary

I was invited to participate in Modcloth's Uniquely You Challenge where we are asked to create an outfit of Modcloth pieces based on one that they choose for us. We were given the Abiding Beaty Dress in black to style. I love this dress for a few reasons. It's no secret that everyone should have a great black dress in their wardrobe. This dress has a universally flattering silhouette that's amazingly versatile. I wanted to show off the versatility of this dress in an outfit that could have you ready for work or the weekend since that's how I have been styling everything for the past week since I started my internship! I chose a literary, vintage inspired aesthetic and went to town. I found so many amazing pairs of shoes when I was browsing Modcloth but I fell in love with the Lucky Chic Flats in this gorgeous crimson. They add a punch of color to the outfit, and I reflected that in the floaty Santiago Sunset Scarf that adds a pretty, summery pattern. I love structured bags so I chose the Put-Together Get-Together Bag which comes in the prettiest light tan color. I took inspiration from words for the jewelry, with the utterly fabulous Quote Couture Earrings and the quirky Live Up to the Type Necklace. Modcloth has been one of my favorite places to shop since I stumbled upon it in high school and their summer picks are pretty stellar right now. Check out some more of their lovely dresses here!

Happy TV


I have been a lifelong fan of television. Now we're in a bit of a golden age, with shows like Game of Thrones and Breaking Bad dominating the conversation, but I have some other shows I'd like to talk about. I have always gravitated toward certain random shows that have made me giddy happy. It's often quirky, smart writing that just makes me roll on the floor laughing and that I hold dear to my heart years after these shows have aired. For one thing, it's just great to be witnessing a golden age in television, but a lot of it is pretty bleak so I unabashedly obsess over the shows that are quirky, shamelessly happy, and willing to look silly. If there's one thing to keep in mind, it's that, as horribly ignorant as those promos were, the actual clothes that they're advertising, are really cute.

Work Out: Part 2

Since I firmly believe in having fun with work-out wear, I've compiled my second installment of outfits featuring fun colors and details that will have you looking your best even when you're sweating your butt off.

I love colorblocking and it's a trend with a perfectly retro sporty touch so a great colorblocked sweatshirt makes for a perfect warm layer for warming up. A cool backless T-shirt will show off your pretty sports bra and also keep you cool. I love wearing clothes that double as normal and athletic because it gives your work out outfit some extra style that can't always be found in typical pieces. A great pair of basic sweatpants with a nice fit (think skinny, but still comfy!) and some printed kicks finish off this outfit perfectly.

Work Out: Part 1

In honor of the big Olympics (kind of a fiasco so far?) rolling in to a tv near you approximately now, here is the first installment in a series of outfits for the gym, yoga, whatever's your jam, because I sincerely believe in holding onto your style aesthetic even when working out.

Neon colors are usually pretty scary in the real world. In work-out world? They're basically all that's worth wearing, so you mights as well go to town and have fun with bright colors where it's socially acceptable and downright cool. I love that there are really no rules besides being able to move and keeping the right things covered so there are so many options. A crazy graphic tank, sports bra with cute detailing, and bright kicks will help you stand out wherever you are. Just to keep things nice and summer and carefree, pair this outfit with a metallic tote that stays stylish and holds absolutely everything so you're not just dragging a sad canvas bag with you everywhere.

Us, a dance

It has been a good long while since I have shared a dance on here, so I'm throwing up one of my favorites. Kate Jablonski is one of my favorite youtube finds. Her choreography is unique and always kind of brilliant. She lets her dancers build character and really make an impact and I am always left moved when I watch her dances. This one, a favorite in particular, asks us to accept each other especially for our differences, instead of being carbon copies of each other. It does so in the most colorful, happy way with one of my all-time favorite songs, Us by Regina Spektor.

Pins of the Week: Shoes

Shoes are a huge weakness of mine. This past week I went a little pin-crazy for shoes (especially at Anthropologie - oh me oh my they are pretty). Everything from summer-ready heels to waterproof boots caught my eye and I'm thankful that I'm restraining myself from spending any money right now because I have a feeling most of it would be spent on shoes... is that really a bad thing though?
